According to study published in Cell, the obesity gene that aids in the maintenance of body weight and fecundity also perform a main function in managing bone density. Leptin plays as a biological bone reducer. It signals the brain to decelerate the speed of bone development. Leptin is the hormone upshot of the obesity gene. The research study is the earliest to prove that the brain has a vital part in calculating and managing bone development and density. Bone scientists are thrilled regarding this discovery as it discloses a new passageway that possibly can be maneuvered in manners to hasten bone density and cure or even avert osteoporosis. (more…)

Orthopedics is the study of the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic doctors specialize in diagnosis and treatment of problems of the musculoskeletal system. The musculoskeletal system includes the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves. The Greek word ortho means straight and pedics came from the Greek word pais meaning children. For many centuries, orthopedists have been involved in the treatment of crippled children. Over the years, the field of orthopedics has expanded to encompass many subspecialties and the treatment of a wide variety of musculoskeletal disorders in patients of all ages. Becoming an orthopedic surgeon takes a little time, but orthopedic surgery is a terrific medical specialty, and the education and training is rewarding.

In orthopedics, scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine. Although it usually does not cause pain, scoliosis or its orthopedic treatment can sometimes affect the self esteem of the child who has the defect. A normal spine when viewed from the side, takes the form of an elongated S, the upper back bowing outward and the lower back curving slightly inward. When viewed from behind, the spine should appear as a straight line from the base of the neck to the tailbone. If an individual has a scoliosis, the view from behind may reveal one or more abnormal curves. Most cases of scoliosis do not get worse, and periodic orthopedic checkups may be all that is needed to correct the orthopedic deformity. Children with a more severe curve that continues to increase, however, may require an orthopedic instrument called an orthopedic brace or even surgery.
Orthopedic braces are used to prevent further spinal deformity (more…)

Fracture of the spinal vertebral is very common orthopedic problem especially for the elderly mainly because of a decreased bone mass and a change in bone structure which eventually make the bones become progressively porous, brittle and fragile. Bones weakened by osteoporosis or by malignant processes account for a large proportion of vertebral fractures. Most of such fractures, that can be fixed using an orthopedic tool, occur as a result of trauma and are due to the weakened structure of the bone through loss of bone calcium and associated alteration of bony support or through frank replacement of bony tissue by malignant cells.

In managing musculoskeletal disorders, physicians often make decisions concerning the use of braces or splints. To prevent injury, bracing can be very helpful for serious injuries and persistent orthopedic problems. Braces and splints are design to alleviate physical conditions, decelerate disease progression, and decrease pain. They are use to immobilize joint and correct bone fracture, to unload a part of a joint and improve pain and function, and to eliminate range of movement in one or more direction. Though braces are of help, wide range of treatment should be explored and use if needed for they are not a substitute for any good rehabilitative program. (more…)

Orthotic devices are shoe inserts that are used to redistribute stress and to accommodate abnormal function of defective muscles or ligaments of the foot. Controlling the posture of the foot and padding certain areas will relieve pressure and provide increased comfort for the foot. This orthotic device may be attached to the sole of the shoe, or as an insole be inserted inside the shoe, may work as cup of the foot, or extended across the ankle to hold the entire foot and ankle in place. These orthotics devices are made to correct an abnormal or irregular walking pattern, align and support the foot or ankle, prevent, correct or accommodate foot deformities thus improving the overall function of the foot or ankle. For various foot problems, doctors of podiatric medicine recommend the use of orthotics as a method of control after certain foot surgery. Once orthotic shoe device is inserted, it effectively controls foot motion during pace to reduce trauma of the lower extremity and to increase walking efficiency. Orthotic Shoe Sole Device To accommodate foot postural abnormalities, variety of heel and sole corrections were made available today in the market A medial or lateral heel or sole wedge (or a combination of both) helps control extreme pronation or suspination from weak tendons, ligamentous instability, or fixed deformities. Wide heel is important to increase the stability of the subtalar joint. Stabilizing the patient’s forefoot to move in a normal step pattern in case of fracture or arthritis with an ankle fusion, a rocker sole is needed. An orthosis device is made up of a unitary, curved wedge having a hook-like shape when viewed from above and includes a heel portion adapted to engage the sides of the heel. A middle portion designed to engage the plantar side of the medial portion of the longitudinal arch, and a front portion designed to engage the plantar side of the forefoot to a level just distal to the first and second metatarsal heads. The orthosis adjusts itself to different arch heights, thus can be made and designed without requiring custom fitting. (more…)

Sports always played a major account for ankle injuries, ankle inversion and other ankle problems. Ankle brace for athletes help support the foot during their sports activity to avoid ankle injuries. Braces are very useful in many ways. To improve stability of the joint, ankle brace provide pressure around the ankle joint. When the need arises, this pressure can be regulated. These are designed perfectly enough to fit and be worn together with any shoe. It is made of padded material purposively created around the vulnerable areas of the ankle like the Achilles’ tendons which are the comfort zones around the ankle. The ankle brace can be used as functional therapy of injured ankle and a support in case of persistent ankle instability. The functional principle of ankle brace is based on tape bondage. It is ideal for athletes who are looking for option than taping and strapping their ankle with the use of zinc oxide tape. Because of its broad instep and an integrated heel-lock, it is very comfortable and easy to wear. Thus effective ankle brace should be an efficient mechanical if it supports problematic ankle and brings maximum comfort to the foot. The stiff support is centered on the middle side of an ankle and has a cavity for the malleolus. The other side is made up of good performance foam which easily adjusts to individual anatomy. The brace can be fastened by means of a diagonal elastic straps that applies pressure around the ankle. While plantar/dorsal flexion permits adequate freedom, inversion/eversion movement is restricted. It is designed uniquely so that it will not inhibit normal movement while giving optimal support for the ankle. The more the braces of a brace have basically controls much. In spite of it, no brace can substitute a real muscle function. Brace is applied to a specific deformity. Most of it is suited to a transitional condition where disorder is at worst no functional control exists. Brace is made of a twisted and bent metal in small frequent intervals towards the direction of correction. (more…)
